Serbia : A Golden Opportunity

Introduction

Serbia, a country rich in history and culture, is also abundant in natural resources, particularly gold (1,2). This article explores Serbia’s economic rights under the Charter of Economic Rights and Duties of States (1974) (3, 4, 5, 6), United Nations and other international/regional treaties (7, 8, 9, 10), and delves into the country’s gold mining industry (11, 12, 13, 14) and gold deposit reserves (15, 16, 17, 12).

Economic Rights and International Treaties

Serbia, as a member of the United Nations, is subject to the Charter of Economic Rights and Duties of States (1974) (3, 4, 5, 6). This Charter, adopted by the UN General Assembly, outlines the fundamentals of international economic relations and the detailed economic rights and duties of States (3). It emphasizes principles such as the sovereignty and equality of states (3). Serbia is a candidate for European Union (EU) Membership.

In addition to the Charter, Serbia is bound by various United Nations treaties and other international legal instruments (7, 8, 9, 10). These instruments play a crucial role in shaping Serbia’s economic landscape and ensuring the protection of its economic rights.

Gold Mining Industry

Serbia’s gold mining industry is a significant contributor to its economy (11, 12, 13, 14). The country has 250 mining fields where mining activities are conducted and 100 exploration fields where some of the largest mining companies in the world operate (11). These foreign companies invest USD 10 to 100 million in geological exploration per year (11).

The richest gold deposits in Serbia are located in the eastern part of the country, primarily in the vicinity of Bor, Majdanpek, Zajecar, and Negotin (11). The so-called Timok Magmatic Complex has been a subject of interest for many major players in the mining industry (11).

Gold Deposit Reserves

Serbia’s gold deposit reserves are substantial. According to the World Gold Council, Serbia’s gold reserves of 38.1 tons make it the leading Balkan economy in terms of gold reserves and 54th in the world (15, 16, 17). The latest estimates suggest that there are 250 tons in existing deposits and 150 tons in potential ones (12).

Conclusion

Serbia’s rich gold reserves and robust mining industry, coupled with its economic rights under various international treaties, present a golden opportunity for economic growth and development. As Serbia continues to leverage these resources and rights, it stands to gain significantly on the global economic stage.
